Holt Supply Shows Off New Showroom, Wares in Burlington, Iowa
The Burlington Hawk Eye
By JOHN VAN NOSTRAND
Car dealers can throw customers the keys to a car they are interested in to take it for a spin. Clothing stores have dressing rooms and mirrors to see if customers like that pair of pants on them and not just on the rack.Holt Supply in downtown Burlington will show customers how new models of showers work -- but the customer does not have to jump in.Those showers are in the plumbing and climate control store's recently remodeled showroom at 802 Washington St.
"The showroom took us about a year and a half to get it done," said Kathy Ewinger. "It took us a little longer than we thought, but it is done."Some companies may have been tempted to relocate to another building when it comes to physical changes, but Ewinger did not want to leave downtown Burlington."We had no choice but downtown," she said. "Plus, we have more room on the second story. Right now it is for storage, but it could be expanded for business."Holt Supply had the room to show off some new wares.
Those interested in remodeling a bathroom can actually see how one of Holt's new showers work, and they don't have to take off their clothes.Showers are not just the standard one with the shower head protruding from the wall anymore. Holt Supply customers can see how people who don't have a big enough bathroom for a traditional hot tub, can have a vertical hot tub. Strategically placed shower heads in the shower-stall wall shoot a strong and soothing stream of water to hit the upper back, hip area and knees.
"The shower jets can be slightly moved to adjust for the height of the person," Ewinger said. The shower head does not have to be just from the wall, either. With some additional plumbing, a shower head can be installed on the ceiling over the shower, giving the person a a rain-like effect."What goes around, comes around," Ewinger said.
Decorating the showroom are pictures of plumbing catalogs from the early 1900s, one that include a similar shower-head fixture.Plumbing for the additional shower heads is just branched from traditional plumbing design used for a shower. Ewinger warned, though, of putting in the pipe for the over-head shower in a ceiling crawl space. The pipe may freeze during the winter and break.
New plumbing fixtures also have safety in mind. Ewinger said one shower faucet can be set a certain temperature limit to avoid a child being scalded by hot water. There also is a sneaky trick to bypass the setting to allow hotter water when needed. Those kind of conveniences are not just in the shower, either. Holt Supply has a new line of toilets complete with a heated seat, automatic seat and lid lift and bidet. Those models are intended for those with physical disabilities but Ewinger said are popular in Europe. "One couple came in after a trip to Europe and bought one for their house," she said.
The heated seat and lid lift can be retrofitted to certain models of traditional toilets. The electric wiring for the accessories is installed in a way to prevent potential electric shock. Depending upon the location of the toilet in the bathroom, Ewinger said the wiring for the accessories can be hidden should the toilet be near a wall.Other new toilet models emphasize water conservancy and one is intended for the mischievous child who may have an interest in flushing items. Ewinger said one model has a wider than normal drainage hole to prevent some of those items from being lodged in the plumbing. Holt Supply has eight locations in the Midwest. At its Burlington site, there are five employees.

Business Transformation Holt Supply renovating site
Chambers Street in Galesburg, IL
The Register-Mail - By John R. Pulliam
A Galesburg company that traces its humble beginnings to a location on South Seminary Street now stretches from Champaign to Sioux Falls, S.D. Holt Supply Co. now is growing here, renovating a building that originally housed Brown Motor Co. into a state-of-the-art wholesale/retail plumbing, heating and air conditioning facility.
Holt Supply was founded by John R. Holt at 515 S. Seminary St., where the company has been based since it opened here in 1971. Based in Bloomington, Holt has locations in the Twin Cities, Galesburg, Champaign, Princeton; Burlington and Des Moines, Iowa; and Sioux Falls. The outside of the building at 120 N. Chambers St. already has attracted the attention of passing motorists. Holt President and CEO Andy Holt said he hopes the new building will open soon after the first of the new year, but the main thing is to do things right.
“We want them to be as delighted with what we do with the inside,” Holt said. The distinctive curvature of the front of the building gives it a distinctive look. Holt said they removed sheet metal that covered windows that will once again be the main feature facing Chambers Street.

With the outside work basically one, interior work is just beginning but can be done during the cold winter days. Concrete floors, exposed insulation, openings where doors and windows will be installed and plywood covering some doors leave one to imagine the finished product. When customers enter the building, they will walk into a storeroom about twice the size of the one on South Seminary Street. Holt said the showroom will be brightly lighted and “it’s always going to have working displays. You’ll have faucets that have running water and working whirlpools. We’re excited to bring this to Galesburg.”
While the company is very particular about the products it carries, Holt said shoppers will be able to find quality merchandise to fit most any budget. “I think we can reach across a lot of different budgets, and I believe this project is particularly exciting because it’s my hometown,” Holt said. “It’s nice to be home and reinvest in Galesburg.”
Holt bought his first new car in the building when it housed Bob Lindsay’s car dealership. He bought a 1985 Honda Accord when he returned to Galesburg after graduating from Creighton University. One advantage in the Galesburg project is that the company already has renovated other locations. “We’re trying to learn from some of the other projects we’ve done,” he said. “This will be our best effort.” Holt said knowing how the building looked as a car dealership is helping the company return it somewhat to its earlier look. “It’s really been more of a restoration project,” he said. Andy Holt’s brother, John Holt, is the general contractor. “He really knows what we’re aiming for on this project,” Andy Holt said.
The building is larger than it appears from the outside. It actually is two 10,000-square-foot buildings joined together. Another Holt connection — Andy Holt’s father, also named John Holt, said the original building was erected in the 1950-52 era. “I can tell you how old it is because I was an apprentice plumber and I put the plumbing in,” he said. The other building was reportedly built in the 1980s. Andy Holt said the company wanted to move downtown to gain visibility. He said projects such as Innkeeper’s and some shops on South Seminary Street got him excited about redoing the building. The company’s wholesale business is very important. There will be a contractor’s showroom to give contractors quick access into and out of the building. He said the contractors’ side of the building also will nearly double in size.
“The idea is with the contractor trade, we can serve them quickly and efficiently,” Holt said. He said there will be a refreshment area in that part of the operation. One item not available at South Seminary Street has warehouse employees buzzing. “Boy, are our guys excited about having a loading dock,” Holt said. “We’ve really increased our capacity to grow out business.” The portion of the building built in the ’80s is very open and will allow Holt to stock products for its other stores. “There’s certain products we will distribute out of here,” Holt said, “to resupply our other stores.”
He said with stores in cities such as Bloomington, Champaign and Burlington, Galesburg’s central location makes it perfect for the distribution portion of the business. John Holt said despite the poor national economy, there are no second thoughts. “Galesburg’s always been good to me,” he said. “I’ve been in business more than 46 years now (starting with other businesses. The nice thing about Galesburg, it’s a very even-keel town, even during the tough times.” “It’s an extremely stable environment to do business in,” Andy Holt agreed. “Hopefully, we can cause somebody else to improve their business or move in from the outside.”
